Diana is in labor, updates

March 7th, 2009

I’m writing from the delivery room right now.  Here is how today played out:

5:00 AM, Diana wakes up and thinks her water has broken
11:00 AM, she has a scheduled appointment with the OBGYN and he says it’s not amniotic fluid and that she is two cm. dilated.
3:00 PM, I get a call at work that she thinks there is more “broken water” and that she is having what she thinks are cramps.
7:00 PM, Home from work she begins having irregular heavy contractions, we decide to take the pugs out for a two hour walk around Philly and to the dog park.  We walked roughly 3 miles all the while Diana was contracting randomly.

9:00 PM, We start timing her contractions with iContraction for the iPhone and by midnight, she is having regular contractions 5 minutes apart.
1:00 AM, We begin to gather our items and our neighbor, Clara, offered to let us use her car instead of taking a cab.
1:30 AM, We’re in Pennsylvania Hospital and Diana is already 4 cm. dilated, Weston’s head is low and they call for an epidural.

3:00 AM, Epidural is administered and that’s roughly where we’re at now.

Diana is dozing off and I’m about to… stay tuned.

Back on.

It’s now 5:50 AM, we both woke up about an hour ago…

4:00 AM, Diana had her water broke.
4:30 AM, Diana is now 6 cm. dilated
5:00 AM, Diana started feeling sharp back pains, so the anesthesiologist was called and she got more epidural flow.
5:30 AM, Pain is gone, contractions are back to back
9:00 AM, Diana is 9 1/2 cm dilated.  She received more epidural fluid for the severe pain and is now sleeping.  When she wakes she’ll have to start pushing
11:30 AM, Diana is fully dilated.  We’re waiting roughly an hour for the head to drop more to start pushing.
1:30 PM, After 3 hours of trying to get the head to drop Diana was brought in for an emergency C-Section.  The operation started out routine, then turned high risk…  The babies head was stuck in the pelvis and I could hear the doctors calling for backup and getting nervous.  They couldn’t get him out… Diana was in pain, extremely nauseous, and said she was freezing cold the whole time…  Weston was finally taken out, but was rushed to the side bed area where 7-10 doctors and nurses surrounded him, shouting out commands and asking for assistance…  Weston wasn’t breathing, they started to prepare him for Intensive Care.  Diana started closing her eyes and falling asleep, I started to lose it a little.  I haven’t slept in days I haven’t eaten, Diana was drifting off, Weston wasn’t breathing…  I got light headed, but then things came around, Weston began to cry, Diana is doing fine now.  Very overwhelming right now. We have to wait an hour to hear from ICU about Weston…  This has been one of the most intense experiences of my life.

I took a cell phone picture off of the display of my digital camera.  I’m still at the hospital and don’t have an SD Card reader… Lot’s more to come.  He’s now breathing on his on, alert, looking around, and a normal color. I’ll post more after I get to see him. He’ll be moving to the regular nursery soon.
