Weston: Rest

March 15th, 2009 | News, Photos | 15 Comments »

Thank you all SO much for all of your support and helping make the funeral such a special and personal moment for us. We know all of you there and all of you who couldn’t make it, had Weston and us in your thoughts today and that means everything to us. We’ll see you all soon. Thanks again for being there and we’re truly taken back by the outreach of support and love.

“Rest”

Hey can you hear me?
I’m calling your name
Hello? Or is this goodbye?
The gleam in your eyes
It troubles my brain
Will I see it again?
So I can rest my head

Weston…Weston! Dancing away
As all of my thoughts get rearranged
Weston…Weston! Turning away
Just when thing seem
To have changed
So I can rest my head

Hey can you hear me?
I’m calling your name
Hello? Or is this goodbye?
The gleam in your eyes
It troubles my brain
Will I see it again?
So I can rest my head

Weston, Mommy never got to see you with her own eyes, but of what she has seen of you in pictures she knows without a shadow of doubt that you were the most beautiful, perfect, and complete embodiment of what the two of us always wanted in our baby.

I was lucky enough to see you a number of times. Early on, I was the only voice you would respond to. I would whisper “Hi, my little baby Weston” and you would slowly open your steel blue eyes and gaze at me blankly.

I also vividly recall placing my finger under your toes and you squeezed your tiny toes around my finger. I know you felt me too and for that moment we officially met each other. I won’t forget about you.

These visions are etched forever on my heart and mind.  Diana and I saw everything in you that we see in ourselves. You were EXACTLY the baby we expected and wanted to see. We spent countless hours feeling and documenting your kicks and punches in the womb, we played you music, listened to your heart, and warned you about the 3 pugs you were going to inherit after birth. It’s funny now to think that we actually had a 5 hour debate on what color to paint your room. And how we debated for hours on what clothes you would wear home from the hospital. It was nearly 10 months of preparation everyday to make sure you had the best possible home environment to live in. We did everything text book perfectly and yet we were dealt the worst possible hand.

Nobody knew your reason why…Why you went away, Now that you are gone I wish you could hear me say, I won’t forget you.

I am Diana’s sister Christina writing from Mickeys computer. I’m not the best with words but I’ll give it a try. I just wanted to let you all know how much it means to the whole family to read all of your comments of love. I also wanted to write something about the time I got to spend with Weston. The pictures don’t even begin to give him justice. Weston was the most beautiful baby boy I’ve ever seen. He had black wavy hair, the cutest nose and perfect little lips. I went to the NICU Sunday and morning and stayed with him till the end. He was always relaxed and never in any pain. The doctors and nurses constantly checked him. At the end it was peaceful. Micks mom got to hold him and kiss him. Then I held him and the doctor took out the breathing tube. I carried him wrapped in a blanket(that Diana and Mickey now have)to a private room where I talked to him and told him how much everyone loved him.I held him to my heart and rocked him gently telling him it was ok now. He slowly drifted off with out any pain or discomfort. Weston will be in my heart forever. I just wanted everyone to know that he wasn’t in pain and it was as peaceful as it could be. Weston will be loved and remembered by all who love Diana and Mickey.

We understand there was some confusion regarding the funeral arrangements. After the cemetery, Diana and I will be spending time together with just our parents, grandparents, and siblings. There will be no after memorial reception or gathering. Thanks for respecting OUR wishes.

What to expect:
- Diana and will have cards printed out that will have a photo of Weston, some words, and some details on our beliefs.
- This is just a graveside ceremony, no one will be speaking
- We will hand out flowers to be put on his grave
- Weston will be buried prior to arrival
- After the cemetery Diana and I will be going to my dad’s with just immediate family.
- Feel free to come up to us during the ceremony
- We understand that no words can express your feeling and don’t feel the need to say anything. By simply being there that is the best thing in the world for us. Saying nothing is fine.

Diana and I will be heading home tomorrow around noon, we welcome anyone to stop by. Again, we appreciate all of the support so far it’s been helping us a lot and it was truly amazing to see the out pouring.

Thanks so much everyone of you.  Diana and I read the comments constitently, it really means the world to us to see this level of support.  Every doctor, nurse, and staff member have been coming in to talk to us, but Diana really needs support from friends and family.  We tried to stay off the radar yesterday until Weston’s passing was official, but now since reality has set in and we are accepting the fact, Diana would love to hear from any of you or a visit for those who are close by.  Our families have been here every minute and it has made all the difference.

We will begin to discuss our next steps with the Pennsylvannia Hospital Social Worker and our families about arrangements for Weston.  We may be shooting for something this weekend in Great Meadows, NJ.  It’s still unclear though.

Thanks.

Diana is under her maiden name here at the hospital “Diana Neary”

Mommy and Daddy love you.

Weston has passed…

1:18pm 3/7/09  - 9:24pm 3/9/09

We decided to donate Weston’s organs to the Gift of Life Donor Program.  We recently  learned that Weston’s heart qualified as an acceptable donor organ and will be used. Weston’s heart may go on to help another infant or even a mother in need.

Unfortunately, Weston had a very difficult night with multiple seizures and uncontrollable bleeding from his brain.  The EEG results verifyed no brain activity and consecutive tests led to the same conclusion.  Weston is currently on life support and will only make it a few more hours to 24 hours…  We’re waiting for final consulation before we remove his breathing apparatus.  We have the most amazing Doctors in the world at CHOP and they provided top notch care.  We love Weston very much and are extremely distraught.  We have family around us and around Weston.  My mom and Diana’s sister will be holding him during his final moments.  I will let everyone know when he passes and keep you informed on future arrangements.  We have our phones off only because it’s too much to have to explain each time.  This page will give you updates until we can get around to calling everyone.  Thank you everyone for your support it means everything to us.

Update on Weston

March 8th, 2009 | News | 33 Comments »

I’m in the cafeteria at CHOP right now eating for the first time since Friday night…

To sum things up quickly,

Around 11PM last night I went down to the NICU to ride with the ambulance and Weston to CHOP (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia).  Weston needs to be in the best care and CHOP is equipped to deal with it.  The ambulance ride was horrible seeing little Weston on a portable ventilation system and inside his little mobile infant transfer machine.  Anyway, we got to CHOP and they got him out of his transfer unit and into CHOP’s NICU.  My dad and I were with him for a few hours and were told that he’ll be in good hands and I need some sleep, so I went back to Pennsylvania Hospital with Diana and her Mom and sister.  Diana is in a lot of pain (physically and emotionally), but we were able to fall asleep last night.  This morning I went back to CHOP (pictured above), here is what I know about his condition:

Weston has a fractured skull and was bleeding from the brain.  The bleeding has pooled around his head and face in various areas.  Weston is also having frequent shakes, which are basically seizures and is now on medicine to reduce/control them.  He is also currently hooked up to an EEG to monitor his brain activity over the next 24+ hours.  The rest of his vitals are in the average range and he’s breathing on his on, but they still have a breathing tube just to assist if anything did occur.  There is no prognosis just yet, it’s more of a monitor everything type thing.  Diana and I have our families with us, so we have support. I’ll try to keep you posted.

Weston is being transferred to CHOP, they found he had 2 fractures in his skull and was bleeding.

I’ll be traveling with the ambulance, Diana has to stay at Pennsylvania Hospital because of the c-section.   Please call Diana for support.

I’ll try and keep you posted as soon as we know something.

I’m going on 40 hours of no sleep as I type this in a hospital bed next to Diana (who is snoring away… morphine will do that to you). Weston has been been in the NICU since he was born. Just moments ago the doctor from NICU who has been watching Weston so far, came in our room and told us that Weston had an “episode” and that he stopped breathing and his heart rate dropped. They were able to get out A LOT of mucus/boogery mess out of his lungs, which was the likely culprit, but decided to put a breathing tube in to be safe. Since he is on the breathing tube now he is going to have his CT scan to make sure the blood around his head is non-threatening. The blood around his head was caused by him being lodged in Diana’s Pelvic bone for hours and the main reason he had to go to NICU to begin with…

Diana is yet to even see Weston, she was too drugged up during the C-Section to remember the nurse holding Weston up just before they put him in his little NICU incubator. Her first visit will be 1AM Sunday morning (5 hours from now). She’ll have to sit up and get into a wheel chair to go down to NICU. Weston will have the breathing tube in when we go.

I’m writing from the delivery room right now.  Here is how today played out:

5:00 AM, Diana wakes up and thinks her water has broken
11:00 AM, she has a scheduled appointment with the OBGYN and he says it’s not amniotic fluid and that she is two cm. dilated.
3:00 PM, I get a call at work that she thinks there is more “broken water” and that she is having what she thinks are cramps.
7:00 PM, Home from work she begins having irregular heavy contractions, we decide to take the pugs out for a two hour walk around Philly and to the dog park.  We walked roughly 3 miles all the while Diana was contracting randomly.

9:00 PM, We start timing her contractions with iContraction for the iPhone and by midnight, she is having regular contractions 5 minutes apart.
1:00 AM, We begin to gather our items and our neighbor, Clara, offered to let us use her car instead of taking a cab.
1:30 AM, We’re in Pennsylvania Hospital and Diana is already 4 cm. dilated, Weston’s head is low and they call for an epidural.

3:00 AM, Epidural is administered and that’s roughly where we’re at now.

Diana is dozing off and I’m about to… stay tuned.

Back on.

It’s now 5:50 AM, we both woke up about an hour ago…

4:00 AM, Diana had her water broke.
4:30 AM, Diana is now 6 cm. dilated
5:00 AM, Diana started feeling sharp back pains, so the anesthesiologist was called and she got more epidural flow.
5:30 AM, Pain is gone, contractions are back to back
9:00 AM, Diana is 9 1/2 cm dilated.  She received more epidural fluid for the severe pain and is now sleeping.  When she wakes she’ll have to start pushing
11:30 AM, Diana is fully dilated.  We’re waiting roughly an hour for the head to drop more to start pushing.
1:30 PM, After 3 hours of trying to get the head to drop Diana was brought in for an emergency C-Section.  The operation started out routine, then turned high risk…  The babies head was stuck in the pelvis and I could hear the doctors calling for backup and getting nervous.  They couldn’t get him out… Diana was in pain, extremely nauseous, and said she was freezing cold the whole time…  Weston was finally taken out, but was rushed to the side bed area where 7-10 doctors and nurses surrounded him, shouting out commands and asking for assistance…  Weston wasn’t breathing, they started to prepare him for Intensive Care.  Diana started closing her eyes and falling asleep, I started to lose it a little.  I haven’t slept in days I haven’t eaten, Diana was drifting off, Weston wasn’t breathing…  I got light headed, but then things came around, Weston began to cry, Diana is doing fine now.  Very overwhelming right now. We have to wait an hour to hear from ICU about Weston…  This has been one of the most intense experiences of my life.

weston_firstpic

I took a cell phone picture off of the display of my digital camera.  I’m still at the hospital and don’t have an SD Card reader… Lot’s more to come.  He’s now breathing on his on, alert, looking around, and a normal color. I’ll post more after I get to see him. He’ll be moving to the regular nursery soon.

Video before he got taken to NICU:

Weston is 6 pounds 8 ounces right now! The doc said that’s in the top 10 percentile of baby weight at 34 weeks. If he continues to grow at this rate and goes full term will be over 10 pounds and Diana will have to go with a C-Section… which sucks.
